Side by Side/UTV Training – Operator Competency

Field Operator Based (8-10 Hours)   

  • Audience: Anyone who is, or maybe, required to operate off road equipment in the field
  • Object: Provide a certified operator competency course with hands-on operation time. Classroom theory and experience. Competency test at the conclusion
  • Content: These are in class field operation courses designed to teach students basic safe operating techniques for the related off-road unit. Student operating proficiency will be tested at the conclusion of the course.
  • Cost: $250/student plus machine rental if required. Minimum of 4 students per session.
  • Certificate Awarded: Side by Side (UTV) Training – Alberta Safety Council Certificate, or
  • Time: 8-10 hours depending on number of students.
  • Availability and Schedule:
  1. Once per month Side by Side/UTV scheduled for Nisku, Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray. Schedule is posted on our Training Calandar and reminder blogs and updates sent out monthly (See schedule for location)
  2. On demand (at one of our sites or your location) with 5 days working notice (subject to minimum fees)
  • Syllabus-Topics covered in the course include:
  1. Off-road vehicle safety pre-inspection (T-CLOC)
  2. Proper PPE selection and use
  3. Safe start-up procedures (BONE-C)
  4. Safe turning and braking
  5. Emergency stopping
  6. Safe riding strategies (SIPDE)
  7. Collision Avoidance
  8. Riding on hills
  9. Riding over obstacles
  10. Emergency preparedness
  11. Safe loading, unloading and load securement
  12. Winching
  13. Trail ride (optional, no extra charge, depending on course location)
  • Required clothing: Please call for course field requirements. Each participant can bring his or her own UTV/Side by Side in safe, serviceable condition or rent a unit provided by Pioneer Rentals. Each course participant must come equipped with the following PPE items.
  1. sturdy, above the ankle boots,
  2. DOT approved helmet,
  3. Riding goggles (or visor on helmet),
  4. Riding gloves (no rubber gloves)
  5. Sturdy jacket. Courses proceeds “rain or shine,” so come prepared for the weather
